Learn self-rescue skills, how to use basic personal safety equipment, rescue principles and river swimming skills to help you gain the confidence needed to take your canoeing, kayaking or rafting skills to the next level.
This 1 day course builds on Swiftwater Rescue 1 and includes theory and practice time on the Kananaskis River where we can get great conditions for training throughout the season. It's a great option whether you've been paddling for years or are new to the sport. For those requiring the certification for work, this course provides certification from Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine that meets NFPA standards and is valid for 3 years.
You can join the group in Kananaskis for this course or choose the transportation option from Red Deer. The option from Red Deer will include a stop at the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre to pick up and return rental equipment you may need for the course.
Swiftwater 1 is a pre-requisite for this course. Book both courses at the same time to save $35.

Where to Meet?
What to Bring?
- Footwear - walking to and along the river as well as spending time in the water
- Appropriate clothing for the weather
- Warm dry clothing to change into after being in the water
- Water safety gear: PFD, helmet, wetsuit booties and either a drysuit (with long underwear - no cotton) or wetsuit and paddling jacket (with swimsuit)
- Lunch, snacks and water
- A copy of your first aid certificate
- Neoprene gloves
- Thermos with hot beverage
You can rent a pfd, helmet, wetsuit booties, wetsuit and paddling jacket from the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre for a minimal fee. You must book your own equipment directly with them.
For those travelling from Red Deer we will be stopping there to pick up and return equipment along the way.

Terms and Conditions
All bookings are non-refundable but we will offer you a credit for a future adventure if you cancel a minimum of 72 hours prior to departure. Cancellations within 72 hours, including no-shows, will forfeit the tour fees. Tours in The Explorer Series usually require a minimum of 4 guests to run. In the event of low bookings we will contact you the day before the tour to cancel. You'll have the option of a full refund or a credit for a future booking.

A Few More Things To Know
We get to play outside on our tours and that means you’ll want to come prepared for the weather. Make sure to dress in layers and come prepared for the unpredictable weather we often get in Alberta. We rarely cancel tours due to weather, as long as we can have a safe adventure. You’ll be amazed at how warm we get snowshoeing at -20C or how much fun hiking in the rain can be!
